Now that the weather falls cold and rainy, I can’t help but to think back to the days when I get my mornings warmed up with my favorite kind-of-sweet breakfast.
I remember my Mom would alternately ask us (my siblings and I) every morning of weekdays to go over to the kanto (street corner) to pick out packs for our morning meal. And we’d gladly carry out because whoever gets to buy, gets to choose what we’d eat for breakfast. And you know it! I would have champorado in my bowl. Simply paired up with my hot chocolatey Ovaltine drink, the little me was all set for school!
What is Champorado?
Interestingly, this Filipino porridge is of dark brown color and is rather sweet depending on how it is drawn up by the taster. Champorado is a rice porridge with sticky rice, tabliya (cocoa tablets), milk, and sugar as its main ingredients. It’s a popular morning meal that can actually be served whether hot or chilled.
Quick Trivia
Did you know that champorado originated in Mexico? It was derived from champurrado, a warm and thick chocolate-based beverage from the latter country. Deliciosa!
It’s been many years over, and with Filipino creativity, it’s expected to have many versions now. But, if it’s that classic champorado you’re eyeing for, Champs Champorado would gladly accompany you back to your childhood, with their offers in a cup.
The Local Brand
During the pandemic, online shops have become people’s virtual tambayan (place of hangout) because of the restrictions outside. And so, it’s quite normal for entrepreneurs to turn to online business today. It’s booming!
Champs Champorado is one of those pandemic babies that started in 2020. The idea is to answer the customers’ cravings instantly by having champorado at the ready. No need for pre-order and a day of waiting! Just say yes to delivery if you can’t get it personally from their food cart.
Not to mention, Julius made sure to preserve that time-honored champorado taste that would relive your childhood episode.
In a cup, you’ll note the cacao factor that brings that earthy flavor and satisfying bitter aftertaste. Of course, the signature sweetness comes with the recipe and Julius opts for raw sugar to achieve it.
Here’s the thing. Actually, champorado is not that simple. The toppings that Champs Champorado offers are still from the all-time-favorites. They have tsoknut, crispy tuyo, rice crispies, cream sticks, ube crunch, choco dust, milk dust, and more!. Hmmm… do they ring a bell from the past?
Champs Champorado is located inside PC Supermarket, Pioneer Centre, Kapitolyo, Pasig City.
While resting from a tiring stroll or shopping activity, have a cup and indulge!
