Batangas City’s Affordable and Original Filipino Treat: Ice Scramble

Do you still remember the days when you were a kid, waiting for the sounds of “Cling! Cling! Cling” of Manong (Filipino term reserved usually for a person older than you) ice scramble vendor? It made us run outside our home without slippers, begging our parents to give us five pesos just to have our cup of ice scramble.

Or going back to our elementary days, when we were peeping through the window of our classroom whenever Manong ice scramble vendor was on the road side. We were always excited to buy while waiting for the bell to ring. And when the bell rang, we quickly ran towards him. Because the first one to come will be the first to be given.

So, what is Ice Scramble? And what does it look like?

Iskrambol or Ice Scramble is one of the most popular and favorite classic Pinoy street foods that choose no specific weather for it to taste the best. This colorful drink recipe is a twist on the Ice Scramble flavors from our childhood. A soft pink crushed ice, topped with marshmallow, powdered milk, candy sprinkles, and your choice of syrup: chocolate, caramel, blueberry, ube, and mango. It has a uniquely bright and lively appearance which makes it irresistible until now. And it reminds us of the simple yet treasured happiness it gave our chilhood.

How it started

Mr. & Mrs. Villaranda are the owners of the Ice Scramble Treats. Let’s find out the inspiring story of how they started their business.

“Actually, Ice Scramble Treats came from my husband’s idea. It started with him since he was a Delivery App Rider before. Then he noticed how huge the demand for the ice scramble business here in Batangas City is. In fact, there are only 3 stores here selling Ice Scramble.

So what we did, we studied the product through YouTube tutorials, asking questions from acquaintances, and then, we bought Ice scrambles in different stores, so that we can compare the flavors and the price range. After we conceptualized the idea, we started with logo-making and menu boards. Our logo and menu are also from my husband’s work, he made it in the PicsArt app.

As in from a very small scratch, we started. Self-effort, perhaps. Because we thought that it needs a lot more money before we release a franchise and we really don’t have enough money yet, since my husband quit that time from being a finance branch manager. After all, he just had delivery as a sideline.

After that, I worked as a real estate agent, and when I received my commission, we started our business. We took the risk to put up an Ice Scramble business.” — Mrs. Leizel Villaranda.
